Sustainability

To sail sustainably, a good start is to follow the RYA Sustainability steps outlined here

The main principle behind Pollyanna sustainability is simple – be positive and just leave the world in a better state than you found her…

Ofcourse it’s never that simple…

Since Captain Cook bumped into the Great Barrier reef in 1768, the forces of the industrial revolution have been at work. Forces that have benefited many – but not our planet Earth and her pearl, blue oceans that sadly were omitted from the business case…

David Attenborough speaks eloquently about the current Climate Crisis and how two thirds of the Great Barrier Reef is dying, due to increases in ocean temperature and acidification here.

The industrial revolution is equivalent to a slow motion collision with a Meteorite, silently poisoning the elements that make not only sailing but our entire lives possible – i.e. clean ocean and clean air!

It’s becoming more apparent these precious elements are rapidly being depleted as the impact of the last 250 years takes its toll. We appear to be on track for another extinction period. This is not literally the end of the world, as our little planet Earth appears to have shrugged off several extinction periods in the past but it is quite a devastating blow for our children and the incredible diversity of life…

So what can we do about it now?

There are brilliant, ‘super minds’ like Climatecolab.org setup in 2009 by a group at MIT and many other organisations around the world that are already making a positive difference towards offsetting and internalising Carbon Emissions. Examples include CleanOcean and OurGoodBrands and Planting Trees in India on a massive scale here.

We can all contribute towards developing an industrial scale response to this challenge and we are confident that it is still not too late to avoid entering the down ward spiral of no return when the ocean exceeds a critical temperature…

phytoplankton dies, oceanic temperature rises, unlocking billions of tonnes of frozen methane, poisoning our seas and food chain, leaving humans to fight amongst themselves over dwindling resources and supplies of fresh water and food…It’s hardly surprising Elon Musk is planning to ship a hand picked selection of 1 million human beings to Mars by 2050 – or is it?

So let’s try to avoid this and stop poisoning the ocean and burning the Earth by helping to make a positive difference to reduce the impact of the industrial revolution and excessive consumption.
